Compression Set Tester of Rubber Silicone EPDM

Rubber Compression Set Test Fixture is used to determine the deformation rate of vulcanized rubber and thermoplastics elastomer subjected to a specified compression deflection at room temperature, low temperature or high temperature for a certain period of compression time. It is especially suitable for testing samples of rubber fittings, vibration dampers, gaskets, seals, etc.

When the rubber is compressed for an extended period of time, it may lose the ability to return to its original thickness. The loss of resiliency is called compression set or permanent set. If the rubber material loses this ability after being compressed during its service life, it might decrease its functional performance and cause negative effects. This compression set apparatus allows you to conveniently measure the compression set of samples after prolonged action of compressive stresses.

The test device is designed according to the requirements of ASTM D395 Method B – Compression Set Under Constant Deflection in Air. It consists of three rectangular flat steel plates with 5 holes on each plate. Five spacers of specified diameter and height require to be threaded through by the bolts and placed on each layer. The steel plates are allowed to be drawn together evenly and parallelly using 5 bolts and tightening nuts located on the outermost plates until they are in contact with the spacers. Besides the standard dimensions, you are available to customize any thicknesses of spacers to achieve the required percentage of compression as per your test.

In addition, a Compression test device in compliance with ASTM D395 method A – Compression Set Under Constant Force in Air and SATRA TM 64 is also available from AmadeTech.

It features an analog gauge to measure the spring deflection when subjected to compression, allowing you to set its deflection to a value corresponding to a desired compression force to be applied to the specimens sandwiched between the steel plates during the test. Please feel free to reach us if you are interested in it.

Test Principle

The original thickness of the rubber test specimens is measured, and then the specimens are placed on parallel steel plates. The steel spacers with the required percentage of compression to control the compression thickness while compressed are added into between the plates. Nuts on the surface of the top plate are screwed in succession to compress the specimen uniformly to a specified height (test specimens and spacers can’t come into contact with each other while compressed). The assembled compression device with samples is placed in an aging oven, stored at a given temperature for a specified time, and then taken out to cool for 30 min. The final thickness is measured to calculate the permanent deformation rate by means of the given equation.
